Areas Of Expertise
Substance Use Disorders & Addiction
Addictive disorders (substances and behaviors) aren’t just about will power and/or morality. There is an actual shift in the brain that causes an individual to continue with the substance or behavior, in spite of suffering negatives consequences for continued use. Therapy can help assess what are the best evidence-based interventions, and encourage abstinence with a substance or behavior.
Relationship Issues
Counseling can help untangle a difficult relationship, and make sense of what needs to happen moving forward. Relationships occur in various environments: the family, the couple, parent-child, friendships, and work relationships. While counseling can be done with couples and family members, individual therapy can also help identify issues from the individual’s perspective, and help with better relationship perspectives and communication tools.
Parenting Issues
There was a book written several years ago entitled, “Parenting Isn’t for Cowards.” This just about sums it up, doesn’t it? From dealing with the demands of being a first-time parent to navigating a difficult situation with your child, therapy can help plan that “roadmap” for more success.
Coping With Life Changes
Many individuals will come into therapy unable to pinpoint what exactly happened, to cause emotional distress. Life changes such as moving to a new community, kids leaving home, a change in work environment – all of these can contribute to a disruption in routine. That change alone can elicit uncomfortable emotions. In therapy, we unpack what’s happened and discuss viable ways to cope with these changes.
Depression
Individuals may enter therapy for the first time due to a lingering sadness, or inability to be motivated for everyday tasks. Uncovering the cause of depression is one of the first steps toward healing, but it can also be beneficial to ascertain whether or not medication may help. Therapists are trained to help individuals through these low spots, and provide coping skills that will help in the future.
Codependency
Codependency is more a conceptional idea, rather than a mental health disorder. It involves a learned pattern in relationships that can lead to difficulty in relationships and emotional distress. Learning how to practice self-care and set boundaries are two significant practices that help in treating this condition in therapy.
Anxiety
Whether an individual is experiencing high levels of anxiety for the first time, or has been suffering from elevated anxiety for a while, therapy can provide coping tools, and help the individual to restructure the internal voice that may be eliciting anxiety.
